PLANTING
-
Roses require at least 6 hours of sunlight each
day in order to flower properly so the first step
is choosing the correct site.
-
Space bushes 24-30 inches apart for good air circulation,
which will cut down on diseases, etc.
-
Prune off any dead or damaged canes before planting.
-
If your roses arrive in bare root form, soak them
in a pail of water with transplant fertilizer added
for at least 2 hours before planting.
-
Dig the hole at least twice as wide and deep as
the pot the rose came in. The graft of your rose
should be 1-2 inches BELOW the soil level after
planting. This applies regardless of what type of
rose you are planting, or where it came from. It
is NOT a good idea to follow planting instructions
which come with bare root roses purchased at department
stores, etc. These are created for mass markets
which usually cater to consumers in much warmer
climates than our Canadian zone.
-
Backfill around your rose 3/4 of the way, and firm
the soil around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
-
Water, and let drain.
-
Finish backfilling around your rose, and water
again. Remember to create a well around
the base so water does not run off each time your
rose is watered. Extra benefits will be gained by
using a transplant fertilizer for the final watering,
and again 2 weeks later.
Water at least weekly, if your area does not receive
at least 1 inch of rain each week. Avoid splashing water
on leaves to prevent diseases.
