Plants for shadeAll plants need some sun or light in a day, although it may only be 4 hours early in the morning or late in the evening. Plants will not thrive in an area of hopeless shade, such as spots shaded by walls, fences, or other barricades. In these locations, a decorative mulch which suits the layout and style of your garden is best. If the garden uses natural materials and soft curves in the planting bed try wood chips or rock mulch. Soils in the shade lose very little moisture through evaporation so it is essential that it drain well. Adding fine wood chips, coarse sand, peat moss or compost will create a light soil with better drainage.
