What's New at Valley K

CLEMATIS

Clematis is available in a wide color range from pure white through red, magenta, yellow, purple and almost blue.  Varieties vary in bloom time from spring to fall, with hardiness ratings from Zones 3-9.  It is wise to choose several varieties to plant in the same area, which vary in bloom times so as to provide you with color throughout the season.  Below is a listing of some varieties and various descriptions.

HYBRID CLEMATIS

These varieties have large flowers & bloom most of the summer.  They should be planted with a south or west exposure.  We recommend taking the vines off the trellis in the fall, laying them on the ground and then watering the roots in well for winter.  Mulch the roots and vines with at least 6" of peat moss once the ground is frozen.  In spring, cut the vines back to new growth above ground level.

  • Bees Jubilee - 6-8" flowers in May & June.  Deep pink with red center stripes in each petal.

  • Belle of Woking - 4-6" double flowers of a silvery lavender blue in May & June.

  • Ernest Markham - 4-6" bright red flowers July through September.

  • Henryi - 6-8" pure white flowers June through August, a classic favorite.

  • Jackmanni - 5-6" velvety, dark purple flowers from June through August.  Lots of flowers on this popular variety.

  • Nelly Moser - 7-9" flowers in May & June, then again in August & September.  Pale pink with red stripes down the center of the petals.

  • Niobe - 6-8" ruby red blooms June through September.

  • Sweet Autumn Clematis - Covered with a cloud of fragrant, 1" creamy white flowers from September to October.  Very easy to grow, very hardy-does not require mulching in fall.

  • Ramona - 6-8" light lavender blue flowers July through September.

  • Ville de Lyon - 4-6" red flowers with broad overlapping petals.  Blooms June through September.

  • Rosie O' Grady - Classed as a Big Petal Clematis, with nodding 2" bell shaped flowers in mauve pink.  Blooms May to June & again in fall.  One of the most vigorous of vines.  This one was bred for the canadian prairies.
