After Planting Care of Clematis

Clematis are gross feeders and require a large amount of food to keep them at their best and in fine blooming form. In early spring each year, you should be working in a good handful of bonemeal and compost to the base of the plant. Around the beginning of June add a generous amount of slow release or timed release fertilizer and let mother nature do the rest! Keep in mind that your clematis will need regular watering the first year after planting, give each plant at least 3 gallons of water once a week, or more depending on the soil and weather conditions. Deep watering in this manner will make the roots grow deep down rather than staying close to the surface, where they could dry out easily.

If your clematis appears to be flowering with smaller and smaller flowers each year, it is likely starving and needs feeding, correct this by feeding as outlined above, giving it an extra shot of water-soluble fertilizer every 3 weeks through the spring and summer as well.

Always discontinue feeding or fertilizing by mid August to allow the plant to harden off for winter. Fertilizing after this time only encourages supple new growth, which can suffer from winter damage if not hardened properly before freezing.
